The following is primarily a backup of the review I left on Goodreads and Amazon for the book, The Wing Thief by Samantha Atkins and published by SmashBear Publishing.

Blurb from the author:

Let me ask you a question. It's a pretty straight forward question, but one that you shouldn't rush to answer. Do you believe in magic?

Vista wanted two things: adventure and freedom. But nothing could prepare her for the fall that would change everything. In a single moment, Vista's comfortable life in the Home Tree is over and she must find a way to survive in the forest alone. She soon learns that not everyone can be trusted and must now race to save the family she left behind.

In a forest filled with magic and trickery, just how far can a flightless fairy go?

A truly magical experience

I'm going to start this off by getting right to the point; I loved The Wing Thief by Samantha Atkins! I am not the target audience in any way, and I'll be completely honest and say that I was a little hesitant at first, but regardless of expectations, I absolutely loved this book!

First and foremost, this is a YA novel; and by default, I am not the target audience. I'm not trying to imply that non 'Young Adults' readers cannot enjoy a YA novel, I'm just pointing out that by very definition of the classification, I am simply not the target. And in all honestly, very few YA novels have grabbed me.

This one did, absolutely.

This story also revolves around Fairies, one in particular. This was something else that gave me pause when I added it to my queue; flashbacks of a certain Disney property that some of my children subjected me to when they were young ensued. But that pause turned out to be wasted energy (yes, a pause can consume energy).

The Wing Thief is a truly magical experience through and through; from the prologue (which you prologue haters cannot skip this time) to the very last chapter, the story is simply brimming with heart, soul, and magic. There is a great dynamic between the two primary protagonists, and Samantha also does a great job painting a worthy adversary (though I won't say anything more).

I would say that this is probably for the younger side of the YA spectrum, at least in terms of who might enjoy this the most. In fact, I would put this as very similar in 'feel' (for lack of a better word) to the first few Harry Potter books. Now, allow me to clarify that point, because I am *not* saying this is 'like' Harry Potter.

If one were to draw a venn diagram containing fans of Star Trek on one side, and fans of, say, Dr. Who on the other, it is my belief that the center section would be strikingly large. In the same vein, should The Wing Thief become as widely read as Harry Potter (which it absolutely should), the center section will most likely be ridiculously large; so large in fact that one might mistake this particular venn diagram as simply a large circle.

*Maybe* I am over-stating this a tad, but, then again, maybe I'm not. I cannot stress enough how much I loved this book! I have already recommended this to my entire family, as well as a few others, and I cannot wait for SOMEONE else I know to read it so that I can talk to anyone about it!

I cannot wait to see what Samantha Atkins does with next.
